How to Grow Chili PeppersHave You Prepared Your Pepper Seeds?

If you haven't done so already, now is the time to prepare your jalapeno seeds so they'll be ready for garden transplant in the warm spring. We've learned that some VERY LUCKY people living in Florida have already begun to harvest their chili peppers, but those of us up in Zone 5 have to wait for warmer weather, due to the tilt in the earth and all. Nine days ago we prepped our Poblano seeds (shown in photo), which take 10-25 days to germinate, and were JUST now seeing the cute little plants starting to break through the soil.

For your jalapeno peppers, timing will fluctuate based on where you are located in the world. Typically for jalapenos, you’ll start the seeds inside 8-12 weeks prior to transferring them outside. Jalapenos like warm weather so you don’t want to transplant them in the ground until 2-3 weeks after the last frost when the soil temperature is about 60 degrees. For us this is typically early June. So if you're in Zone 5, the time to start your seedlings is NOW. Be sure to check your seed packet for exact timing for your peppers.

Don’t fret if you don’t get started early enough. You can always buy seedlings at your local nursery after the last frost and plant them directly into the ground.

Tilapia Casserole with Jalapenos
and Spicy Mustard

For this recipe, we chose the Napa Valley Mustard Company Brand Habanero Mustard. It’s an extra hot and sweet mustard and lends itself to our preferred spiciness. Incorporating tilapia into a casserole dish is a great way to get your healthy fish in a fun and tasty meal.

We found this post over at PRWeb.com. Are they kidding? This is not a new trend in our world! We've all been cooking with chili pepper since were were in diapers (OK, maybe not quite that long), but still, we love it when a good PR person gets their spin on. The article includes some links to some good recipes, so you might want to check it out.

Chicken With Avocado-Pomegranate Salsa

Yum! This delicious looking recipe was posted over at AZCentral.com. Of course the salsa is made with jalapeno peppers, extra if you're thinking about it, but the sound of a avocado-pomegranate salsa combination makes us weak in the knees. We'll have to try this one soon.

Pineapple-Glazed Chicken with Jalapeño Salsa

Here's another recipe that looks and sounds absolutely delicious, posted over at epicurious.com. Pineapple glazed...jalapeno salsa...can you tell we're hungry right now?

Cooking with kids: Recipes for spring break

This was posted over at CBS News. It's really a smart idea. Parents often struggle with foods for picky children, so why not introduce them to some jalapeno peppers! Remember that while jalapenos aren't quite so spicy to the indoctrinated, they ARE quite spicy to the youngins. Hey, we all had to start somewhere! You can easily reduce the jalapeno heat by removing the pepper innards and seeds.
